WHAT IS AN ASSURED SHORTHOLD TENANCY

BACK TO MENU

An assured shorthold tenancy (AST) is the most common type of tenancy for a private landlord or letting agent.

You usually have an AST if:

the original tenancy started on or after 28 February 1997

the tenant doesn’t share any accommodation with their landlord and they live elsewhere

It won’t have an AST if the rent is:

more than £100,000 a year

less than £1000 a year in London or £250 a year outside London
